Gentile da Fabriano: Coronation of the Virgin

Located at The Getty Museum in Malibu, California, this work by Gentile painted for his native town, Fabriano in the Marches, probably for a confraternity associated with the church of San Francesco. Originally the panel was double-sided and served as a processional standard held aloft in parades that honored the Virgin Mary. Sometime prior to 1827, the panel was sawn down the middle to create two paintings; the reverse, depicting the Stigmatization of Saint Francis is now in the collection of the Fondazione Magnani-Rocca, Parma, Italy.

Angelo Bronzino: A Young Woman and Her Little Boy

Fra Angelico: The Annunciation

A masterpiece of Renaissance art, the Annunciation that Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro) painted for the north corridor of the San Marco convent is arguably his finest version of this traditional theme. Painted in fresco, it formed part of the decorative scheme at the Dominican convent in Florence - one of the most important sets of murals from the Renaissance in Florence. Financed by the Florentine Medici family, the commission was awarded around 1440 and included the convent’s altarpiece together with more than fifty other frescoes.

Pietro Perugino: The Marriage of the Virgin

The Marriage of the Virgin, a painting by Perugino, the Italian Renaissance master, depicts the marriage between Mary and Joseph. It is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Caen, France. Michelangelo di Ludovico Buonarroti Simoni, best known as Michelangelo,was an Italian painter, architect and sculptor of the High Renaissance; Michelangelo painted this Holy Family for a Florentine merchant, Agnolo Doni. The ‘tondo’ by Michelangelo, which is the only finished panel painting by the artist to survive. Tis masterpiece can be found today at Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Theodore Gericault: Le Radeau de la Méduse

Theodore Géricault was a French Romantic painter and lithographer. The Raft of the Medusa is an oil on painting of 1818 and has become an icon of French Romanticism. This work shows the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of today’s Mauritania. Most of the people on the Méduse died and those who survived endured starvation and dehydration and practiced cannibalism. This event became an international scandal because was attributed to the incompetence of the French captain.

All distinctive landmarks in each city, traffic and signs; the elements which a city identifies herself with and give one a sense of orientation, are erased. What occurs here is the loss of the site in favour of the bland grandeur of globalization. The work is originally made to be shown in loop, as an infinitely continuing city.

Enrique Ramirez: Day 14, Ocean Project

The Ocean project begins in 2010, as a Franco-Chilean production, with a clear objective: reminds one of the trips made in 1890 by the France I, one of the largest five-masted boats, hull and steel masts, of his time, and served the company as Dunkirk cargo between Europe and Chile. On his first trip he transported 5,000 tons of coal in Iquique, Chile to recharge 5500 tons of nitrate. In 1901, during a voyage to Valparaiso with a cargo of coal, France I experienced a severe storm. The crew abandoned the boat and was collected by the four-masted German Hebe.

GEGO, Gertrud Louise Goldschmidt

GEGO, Gertrud Louise Goldschmidt (b. 1912 in Hamburg, d. 1994 in Caracas) was one of the leading artists of her generation in Latin America, known above all for her large-scale spatial installations. She regarded her works not as sculptures, but as structures or drawings in space. Gego was of Jewish origin and had to emigrate to Venezuela in 1939, at the age of 27. In 1987, Gego was sent some questions by the Senate in Hamburg as part of a study entitled ’The Exile and Emigration of Hamburg Jews’, led by Professor Trapp. Gego filled out the questionnaire, but never returned it to Trapp. After her death, the Fundacìon Gego found her written answers and some reflexions and notes about her works. N. David combines present day footage from Caracas and archive footage of Gego’s work and life with Gego’s texts and statements from curators, art historians and family members.

"The Ship of Tolerance" by Ilya & Emilia Kabakov

Since 2016, the Zug filmmaker Remo Hegglin documented the "The Ship of Tolerance" project in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Zug, with more than 2’000 participants, and numerous project partners. It included a whole region and attracted worldwide attention. First realized in the oasis town of Siwa in Egypt in 2005, the participatory project "The Ship of Tolerance" of Ilya and Emilia Kabakov has meanwhile made appearances in Venice, St. Moritz, Sharjah, Miami, Havana, New York, Moscow, Rome, and Rostock. With "The Ship of Tolerance", the internationally renowned artists seek to bring people of different continents, cultures and identities together by actively involving them in the project. Particularly important to them are the children.

From humble Harlem beginnings herself, the indefatigable Edy has for decades introduced underserved youth and seniors to the transformative power of art. Filmed in an observational style over three years, A New Color creates an opening to see the world through Edyís eyes and her artistic legacy commemorating the great events of her time. Those events keep coming, as we see when the death of Edyís nephew becomes a national symbol of racist policing. The persistence of racial inequality in this country evokes for activist artists like Edy powerful and deep questions: Have Edyís nearly eight decades of social justice work meant something? Has it been worth the sacrifice? Can building multicultural bridges through art bring about positive change? Who will carry on her civil rights legacy? "Going Attractions" celebrates the splendor and grandeur of the great cinemas of the United States, built when movies were the acme of entertainment and the stories were larger than life, as were the venues designed to show them: Thousands of seats, giant screens, exotic and ornate interiors with balconies and lounges, in-house organs and orchestras, amazing marquees, and air conditioning back when houses had none. The film also tracks the eventual decline of the palaces, through to todayís current preservation efforts. WHO BY WATER

"Who by Water" is a recut of Luc Perez’ last short film "the Drowned" made during the lockdown in Danemark. The idea was to delete the film characters and dialogues to keep only empty places. The Danish village Marstal, is becoming a empty town anted by its own ghosts and maritime history. For the past two decades, Luc Perez has been focusing mainly on animation and have developed his very own technique – a mix between analog painting and computer compositing. He does everything by himself, except the soundtrack, from the first script draft, storyboard, animatic, design, editing to post production. He has achieved several works for other directors from all around the world, who wanted to integrate animated sequences in their films or documentaries, such as Wolfgang Becker (Good Bye, Lenin!) or Raed Andony (Best Documentary at the 67th Berlinale).

DON’T WORRY... by Oksana Karpovych

Oksana Karpovych’s film, "Don’t Worry, the doors will open" was shot over summer 2018 on elektrychkas, typical Soviet commuter trains that travel between the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and small provincial towns. This film invites us to share a ride with working class, mostly marginalized passengers and vendors. Following a number of people from one grimy wagon to another, from station to station, from day to night, we are immersed in the daily struggles of their lives. Filmed during a war time, the film is a look at the human condition and an intimate point of view on history of independent Ukraine as it is experienced by the common people. We do not see images of war in the film but feel its presence in the air penetrating our character’s minds and hearts. Don’t Worry, the Doors Will Open is an atmospheric and intensely human portrait of Ukrainian society on the move.

Land of the Jaguar

A short movie by Oto Hudec portrays a simple performative painting in hills above the Jaguar-Land Rover factory in Nitra, Slovakia. Slovakia is the biggest producer of cars per capita. However, although creating jobs, the negative side of the car industry is its high emissions, taking into account produced vehicles, especially SUVs. The Jaguar Land Rover factory in NItra is built on fertile soil close to a pittoresque forest of Zobor mountain. In a video, a painter is covering the image of the factory with layers of paint, until there are no traces of civilization- the urbanisation is turned back to forests and grassland- as this landscape might look thousands of years ago.

The scenarios in Paul Rosero Contreras’ Purple Haze come from a dystopian future. A future in which the ocean has become acid due to carbon dioxide contamination of the atmosphere, thus preventing the normal growth of certain sessile marine organisms. The artist, together with biologist colleagues, study some species that inhabit the area of the volcano Roca Redonda, in the Galapagos, where the volcano activity naturally acidifies the water.
